our trip to the maritimes

The drive there and back
Nigel, Rowan and I drove down to NB on Friday of the May long weekend with my sister Heather. Rowan was very well behaved on our drive to NB and back. We drove during the
night, so she slept most of the way. We had to pit-stop pretty frequently to stay awake (lots of T.Ho's and Irvings) but otherwise the trip went very well.

We saw a small live moose on the road and, just a minute later, a larger dead one that had been hit by a transport truck. Boy, that's messy. Sobering, though, because if we had hit that moose, we would likely have died.

The visiting
Of course, the trip was full of visiting with my NB family. We stayed with my Dad and
step-mom Valerie. Thanks again for your hospitality! We created a bit of a whirlwind of food and baby toys at their house, but Rowan was very friendly so I think we might get invited back. :-)

Our last night there, we played some semi-drunken four-handed cribbage, ate salty fish and salty-sweet kettlecorn, goofed around, and hung out in the hot tub. Good times. Ah, New Brunswick.

Rowan loves her auntie Heather, but that's no surprise. She's full of fun and has "alligator hands" that chomp Rowan in silly ways.

We had lots of great visiting with my Grammie and Grampie. Rowan was a bit strange at first, but seemed to warm up to Grammie especially.

We visited my aunt Linda in the hospital. It was great to see her doing so well after her stroke; we were pretty worried about her for awhile. She should be going home at the end of the month. Luckily, she doesn't seem very impaired from the stroke; her mobility is still a bit shaky, but it doesn't look like she will have to use a wheelchair.

We visited my cousin Tracey, her boyfriend Derek and their two-month-old Kali. Rowan and Kali couldn't get enough of each other. Super cute! Rowan kept trying to touch Kali's hands and was very excited, lots of vocalising and hand-shaking. Kali seemed equally interested in Rowan, in her own way. Next time they meet, they will probably be chasing each other around.

We went to Cap-Pele/Shemogue to visit my step-brother Ricci and his wife Isabelle for dinner at their lovely home. While we were there, we visited the ocean. What a beautiful day, too. Note the bare feet in the group shot!

Dad, Heather, and me. Aaargh! Salty fish monsters!

Our ever-changing Rowan
- is now sitting up without any support at all for long periods of time.
- is teething! For real this time. The point of one bottom tooth is through.
- has a whole new set of vocalisations and body language, including leaning back into Nigel or me when she isn't sure about a situation or person.
- is very interested in the other kids at playgroup (and on the street, and in shops...)
- has discovered her feet and loves to take off her socks. Sometimes, she chews or sucks on her toes.
- can stand with very little support.
- has been trying to pull herself up from a lying down position using the edge of her playpen. Time to move the crib down, I guess!

i feel so lucky to have spent the whole week with you guys, thanks for the road trip!! within that week, I noticed a lot of interesting changes with Rowan too, or at least changes in how she interacted with me. When she takes off her socks, she gets so excited! One time when she was sucking on them, I mimicked her by slobbering on her sock too! After that, we played a game where she would put it in her mouth, then offer it to me, then it was back to her again. SO CUTE! Alligator hands is also fun! She definitely recognizes the little tune that I sing ("the alligator hand... goes munch, munch, munch!") and anticipates her hand being chomped by my reptilian fingers!

It was great to spend time with you, too. She remembers the Alligator Hands, too. I've been playing that game with her the last couple of days and her eyes just light up. Super cute.

oh man! based on that picture of Rowan and Grammie in the rocking chair - our dear sweet Rowan looks like she's plotting to take over the world - or at least steal all the jewellry from her unsuspecting family members.
